Laboratory and Office Complex Design and Construction

Laboratory and Office Complex Design and Construction
Industry: Feed, Grain & Oilseed
Project Type: Architectural | Civil & Structural | HVAC | Process Engineering | Piping | Controls Electrical | Fire Protection | Plumbing | Project Management | Design-Build | Power | Instrumentation Engineering
Project Overview
A confidential feed, grain, and oilseed client needed a new facility to replace its leased fermentation and lactic laboratories. The facility also had to house offices, locker rooms, conference rooms, break areas, and upgraded employee amenities. The approximately 12,000-square-foot building was planned next to the Lactic Process Building to make coordination with operations easier, and the site added parking and met current facility standards.
After an initial preliminary design effort, Matrix Technologies was selected for the fast-tracked Design/Build project.
Scope of Work
Matrix Technologies provided engineering and construction support from detailed design through occupancy, including:
- Field investigations and 3D scanning to establish existing conditions
- Complete building and site design to client global and site standards, including specialized laboratory systems and utility connections
- Specification and procurement of long-lead equipment
- Permitting coordination
- Staged design reviews at 30%, 60%, and 90%, plus bid, approval, and construction packages
- Construction coordination, including submittal and RFI reviews and bi-weekly progress meetings
- Project management and milestone tracking
Matrix completed the design, procurement, and ROM estimate within six months to support the accelerated schedule.
Project Results
The client moved out of its leased laboratory space into a new laboratory and office complex with upgraded employee amenities. The project stayed on its accelerated schedule from design through construction, and the facility reached occupancy with minimal issues despite its size and complexity. Early field investigations and advance procurement of long-lead equipment helped avoid problems during construction.
