Greenfield Distillery Design and Automation

Industry: Distilled Spirits
Project Type: Process Engineering | Automation | Controls Electrical | Piping | Civil & Structural | Instrumentation Engineering | Power

Project Overview

A confidential distilled spirits manufacturer planned a new greenfield distillery in Central Kentucky, capable of producing up to 10 million proof gallons of spirits a year. The facility is built around a single insulated column still and has extensive process, utility, storage, and material handling systems. Matrix Technologies was selected as the engineering partner for its distillery design experience.

Scope of Work

Matrix Technologies provided engineering, automation, and construction support from design through startup, including:

  • Process design basis and P&IDs covering multiple mash cookers, more than 20 fermenters, a beer distillation train, distillate storage, and barreling systems
  • Design of an automated clean-in-place (CIP) system and steam and condensate return systems for an estimated 100 million BTU/hour steam demand
  • 3D modeling and full facility design for process and utility systems, foundations, and equipment supports
  • Industrial controls network design, PLC and HMI software development, and control system integration
  • Construction management and startup coordination

Project Results

Matrix laid the engineering and automation foundation for a greenfield distillery that can produce up to 10 million proof gallons a year. The design brings the facility's production and utility systems together and includes automated CIP and a controls platform that can scale with the facility's future needs.
